FAQs
(Original) How can I tell if I need a furnace replacement?
(Original) If your furnace is 10 years old or older, it will likely show signs that it is losing efficiency. Regular maintenance can improve its operation, but if you experience a slow system, reduced airflow, higher than normal energy bills, strange odors, or loud noises, it might be time to consider a replacement.

(Original) Why is my furnace blowing cold air?
(Original) Check your thermostat to make sure it’s set to “Heat” and not “Cool”. If it is, check the furnace itself to see if the air filter is dirty or if the drain hose is plugged—these are other common culprits. Call one of our professionals right away for a repair if these tips don’t work. You could have a more serious problem on your hands.

(Original) How long will my furnace or boiler last me?
(Original) The lifetime of your heating system depends on how well and how often you have it serviced—routine maintenance is key to maximizing system efficiency and performance. However, on average, a furnace will last anywhere from 15 to 18 years, while a boiler’s lifespan ranges from 15 to 30 years.

(Original) How often should I replace my air filter?
(Original) You should change your air filter every one to three months—or more often if you have pets or bad allergies. If you use a high-efficiency media filter rather than a standard one-inch version, swap it out every six to 12 months. This will help it catch airborne pathogens and contaminants without blocking airflow.

(Original) How long will my air conditioner last?
(Original) When properly maintained every year, you can expect your cooling system to last you anywhere from 10 to 15 years.

(Original) Why is there ice on my air conditioner?
(Original) Ice forms on A/Cs when there isn’t enough airflow over the evaporator coils. This often happens when the air filter gets too dirty. Your system could also be low on refrigerant. If you see ice on your air conditioning system, turn it off right away and let it thaw out. See if your air filter is dirty—if so, replace it with a new one. If the filter looks clean, call one of our experts to diagnose and fix the problem.

(Original) Should the A/C fan be set to "auto" or "on"?
(Original) In short, it depends on how you want air to flow. The “auto” setting will run the fan only when it’s needed to hit your set temperature. This is ideal for you if you want to keep cooling costs to a minimum. The “on” setting is perfect for those who want consistent temperatures and uninterrupted airflow. Setting the switch to “on” can also help curb allergy and asthma symptoms—air is constantly flowing, which means it’s also constantly filtering your indoor air as it flows through your system. The experts at Tom’s Heating can help you pick the best programmable thermostat.

(Original) What is indoor air quality and why is it so important?
(Original) Indoor air quality (IAQ) refers to the purity and conditions of air within a building—whether a home or business—and how it affects the health and comfort of those who live and work in that space. Because poor air quality can cause health problems—like allergies, asthma, reduced lung function, fatigue, and respiratory and cardiovascular problems—it’s important to know where yours stands to protect those around you.

We have been using Tom's Heating for our boiler for about 5yrs now. Our first boiler was a high efficiency combo unit installed in 2010 that replaced a cast iron boiler. At the time, it was like buying a Cadillac to replace a Chevy. Worked great until the 9 year mark. Then it started to nickle and dime us to death. Every time during cold of winter. Tom's Heating was the only contractor who was willing and able to fix it and get it running. The original contractor was no longer in business. Then this late November, on que, it died. No heat or hot water for a week. Tom's to the rescue! Not that we wanted to have to replace the boiler, not cheap, but had no choice. The guys did a phenomenal job with installation, all shiny and new. Purrs like a kitten. Pete, Matt, Jordan and Enrique stayed late and had the install done in one day. I was especially impressed by the younger guys who just followed Pete's lead and worked diligently to get the job done. Thanks to Tom's Heating and all the guys.

While my husband and I were out of state on vacation, our heater went out and the temperature went down over 10 degrees overnight (and was still dropping). My mother was housesitting, and we felt pretty helpless being a state away. Luckily, the furnace had Tom's sticker on it, so she called. Despite it being a holiday weekend, they sent a tech out same-morning. He quickly diagnosed it, procured the parts, and had it running within a few hours. It was a huge relief knowing my mom was in good hands, and we'll definitely call in the future if anything else happens!

Yesterday, we had Tom's install our newest Furnace from them! Over the past 41 years and 3 different Homes during that time, we have used Tom's for a total of 7 A.C. or Furnace units. All, with superb Installations and Service. Thank you so much Paul, Fred, Jordan and Enrique', as well as all of the Office Staff for all that you do for all of us that depend so much on your expertise! 'Tom' is looking down on all of you with a smile on his face! See you next year for our yearly Maintenance Check-up!

We’ve had Tom’s out for our twice yearly HVAC tuneups since we’ve owned this home. This year our old furnace finally gave up and needed to be replaced. We got three quotes and Tom’s was the most reasonable. It wasn’t the cheapest, but it was the most comprehensive and spec’d the best equipment. When the guys came out yesterday to install the furnace the tradition of excellent people as well as excellent service continued. Matthew and Enrique were professional, friendly and detailed. They did a beautiful job of installing and the area they worked in was left cleaner than when they started. They went the extra mile of changing out my return ductwork to match their higher standards of quality. They also cleaned up all of the drain lines and wiring so it is now easily accessible and marked. I would have both of them back at anytime to work on my home. Out of all the contractors we’ve had come into our home over the years, these two are amongst the best - exactly what I would expect from Tom’s. Thank you guys!
